1950s EASY-POP Songs and Singers...on the verge of Rock 'n Roll
Mack the Knife recorded by Bobby Darin introduced August 24, 1959

from ‘The Threepenny Opera’
Mack the Knife, written in 1928 as Moritat or Theme from the Threepenny Opera, became Bobby Darin’s signature song. ‘Mack’ is the character Macheath, the murderer, in The Threepenny Opera. The light melody makes this feel like an upbeat song but it contrasts sharply with the lyrics about a criminal. Bobby Darin also recorded the bouncy 50s pop hit Dream Lover, which he wrote himself.
