Before shortening her name, Delloreese Patricia Early was born in Detroit and began singing in church when she was six years old. She was hired by Mahalia Jackson to sing with her troupe in the 1940s. Later the full-voiced, rich alto singer joined the female gospel group, ‘The Meditation Singers’ and performed with Erskine Hawkins’ R&B orchestra early in the 1950s. An appearance at Detroit’s famed ‘Flame Show Bar’ helped develop her individual, tough and brassy style. She was voted ‘The Most Promising Singer’ in 1957 by Billboard, Cashbox, Variety, the Disc Jockeys of America, and the Jukebox Operators Association. She appeared in the film ‘Lets Rock’ in 1958. The actress and singer appeared on many TV series including her own, ‘Della’ in 1970, in ‘Chico and the Man’ in the late seventies, and ‘Touched By An Angel’ with Roma Downey in 1994.
