The Valentes were Italian citizens making their home in Paris when Caterina, the youngest of four children was born. Her Spanish father played classical accordion and her Italian mother was a dancer and musician. In the early 50s she began a solo career singing in German, French, Italian, and Spanish. She introduced herself to European audiences with her recordings of Istanbul and I Love Paris. Her recording, Malaguena, in German, led to her first English recording of Andalucia retitled The Breeze and I. In 1955, Gordon MacRae presented her on the ‘Colgate Comedy Hour’ television series as the ‘Malaguena’ girl and The Breeze and I became a worldwide hit. Her effervescent talent made her Europe’s most successful female recording artist. Charismatic Caterina Valente is a true world citizen having sung in twelve different languages. She also plays guitar and has acted in fifteen films, including ‘Mannequins for Rio’ sometimes appearing with her brother Silvio Francesco. Another brother Pietro Valente is an actor and musician.
