Silky smooth soul singer and songwriter, Brook Benton was born Benjamin Franklin Peay in Camden, South Carolina. He began his career with the Camden Jubilee Singers and moved to New York in 1948 to join gospel groupsóBill Langfordís Spiritual Singers, the Langfordaires, the Golden Gate Quartet, and the Jerusalem Stars. He recorded under the name Benjamin Peay in 1953 and then teamed with writer/producer Clyde Otis to create a violin-studded variation on the R&B sound. His own composition, Itís Just A Matter Of Time was this rich baritoneís first big hit but he is widely known for his sixties recordings of Rainy Night in Georgia and Fools Rush In. His pairing with Dinah Washington produced two big hits in 1960, Baby and A Rockiní Good Way. Brook Benton died in New York City in 1988 of complications from spinal meningitis.
